A student's first course on quantum mechanics provides the foundation essential for much of his or her future work in physics, be it in atomic, elementary particle, or solid state physics. This introductory textbook contains not only the foundations and many applications of quantum mechanics, but also new aspects and their experimental verification. It has as its particular virtues clarity and conciseness of presentation, while at the same time being self-contained. Comprehensibility is further guaranteed by the inclusion of all the mathematical steps required for a complete understanding. Carefully chosen problems help to consolidate the student's knowledge. In the introductory chapters, starting from the historical evolution of the subject, the fundamental postulates are developed inductively by means of an interference experiment. Thereafter the structure is purely deductive, covering all of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, plus the quantization of the radiation field in the context of optical transitions. As well as the quantum mechanical "essentials", for instance, detailed treatments of scattering theory, time dependent phenomena, and the density matrix, such topics as the theory of quantum mechanical measurement and the Bell inequality are dis- cussed. A separate chapter is devoted to supersymmetric quantum mechanics, an area which to date has been accessible only in the research literature.

Rapid progress in the field of sialic acids has made it desirable to collect the new data about these unique sugars and to continue the series of books on this topic. In 1960, A. GOTTSCHALK wrote "The Chemistry and Biology of Sialic Acids and Related Substances" (Cambridge University Press) and in 1976, A. ROSENBERG and C. -L. SCHENGRUND published "Biological Roles of Sialic Acids" (Plenum Press). In this book emphasis is given to various modern methods used in the isolation and analysis of sialic acids. New approaches to the synthesis of free and bound sialic acids are described and the vast field of occurrence and metabolism of these substances is reviewed. Sialidoses are dealt with in one of the chapters, because sialidases have been recognized as factors of pathophysiological im­ portance. As knowledge is increasing about the involvement of sialic acids in many aspects of cell biology, another chapter is devoted to these phenomena. With this book I intend to demonstrate modern trends in sialic acid chemistry and biochemistry, and I hope that it will be of practical use and find its place in laboratories rather than in libraries. This publication offers an opportunity to thank all colleagues in many countries, including my coworkers at the universities of Bochum and Kiel, for their cooperation, stimulating discussions and, very important, useful criticism. The continuous cooperation with J. F. G. VLIEGENTHART and his coworkers, Utrecht, has been rewarding in many respects.

In the ten years that have elapsed since the first edition of this book went to press, the cytochrome P450 field has completed the transition to a discipline in which structure and mechanism, even regulation and biological function, are dealt with in molecular terms. The twin forces that have propelled this remarkable progress have been the widespread adoption of molecular biological approaches and the successful application of modem structural techniques. Only a few P450 primary sequences were available in 1985, whereas hundreds of P450 sequences are now available. Site-specific mutagenesis was then mostly a proverbial gleam in the eye of the P450 community, but it is now a standard technique in the research repertoire. The first crystal structure of a cytochrome P450 enzyme had just been solved in 1985 and appeared on the cover of the first edition. Today, the high-reso lution crystal structures of four soluble bacterial P450 enzymes are available and the race is on to develop approaches that will permit us to determine the structures of the membrane-bound forms of the enzyme. The past ten years has seen phenomenal progress let us hope that the next ten will prove equally exciting. The book is informally divided into four sections. In order to hold the book close to the advancing front of research, some of the chapter topics from the first edition have been dropped to make room for new or expanded topics.

This introductory course on quantum mechanics lays the foundation to advanced courses on the physics of atoms, elementary particles, and condensed matter in a concise, comprehensive style. The book meets the students' needs by giving all mathematical steps, worked examples with applications throughout the text, and many problems at the end of each chapter. It contains nonrelativistic quantum mechanics and a short treatment of the quantization of the radiation field. Besides the essentials, topics such as the theory of measurement, the Bell inequality, and supersymmetric quantum mechanics are discussed.

The purpose of this book is to provide core material in nonlinear analysis for mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and mathematical biologists. The main goal is to provide a working knowledge of manifolds, dynamical systems, tensors, and differential forms. Some applications to Hamiltonian mechanics, fluid me­ chanics, electromagnetism, plasma dynamics and control thcory arc given in Chapter 8, using both invariant and index notation. The current edition of the book does not deal with Riemannian geometry in much detail, and it does not treat Lie groups, principal bundles, or Morse theory. Some of this is planned for a subsequent edition. Meanwhile, the authors will make available to interested readers supplementary chapters on Lie Groups and Differential Topology and invite comments on the book's contents and development. Throughout the text supplementary topics are given, marked with the symbols ~ and {l:;J. This device enables the reader to skip various topics without disturbing the main flow of the text. Some of these provide additional background material intended for completeness, to minimize the necessity of consulting too many outside references. We treat finite and infinite-dimensional manifolds simultaneously. This is partly for efficiency of exposition. Without advanced applications, using manifolds of mappings, the study of infinite-dimensional manifolds can be hard to motivate.

The second English edition has been updated from the fifth edition of the original German text. The principal addition is a chapter on nuclear ther­ modynamics. We consider in this chapter the behaviour of nuclear matter at high temperature, how it may be studied in the laboratory, via heavy ion experiments and how it was of great importance in the initial stages of the universe. Such a phase of matter may be described and interpreted using the tools of thermodynamics. In this way a connection between particle and nuclear physics and the currently exciting research areas of cosmology and astrophysics may be constructed. With the progress of experimental and theoretical methods, atoms, nuclei, nucleons, and finally quarks have been analysed during the course of this century. The intuitive assumption that our world is composed of a few constituents - an idea which seems attractive, but could not be taken for granted - appears to be confirmed.
