This revision includes captions and illustrations which reflect a more multi-cultural approach to theatre, giving greater emphasis to the contributions of women, African-Americans and Hispanics. This edition provides a more logical context for musicals; the updated design section covers new developments in theatre technology, such as computer-aided design (CAD) and black box theatre; and a new section acknowledges alternative acting styles, while still emphasizing Stanislavski and believability. By focusing on the context in which students have generally experienced theatre, this audience-centred text explains the core concepts of the theatre, demonstrating what it is like to perform or work behind the scenes. The organization of the text progresses through the audience, performer, direcor, playwright and designers; the final chapter examines all the elements of a single production, Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman".
